Antique Ethiopian Oromo Brass or Bronze Arm Cuff

Sale price$185.00

This substantial antique arm cuff is attributed to the Oromo people of southern Ethiopia. Crafted from an aged brass or bronze alloy, its restrained form is enlivened by hand-engraved circles, linear bands and geometric motifs. Years of handling and wear have created a deep, richly varied patina that emphasizes the cuff’s sculptural character.  This piece has character.

Its open, penannular form is sometimes compared with African manillas—metal ornaments that could also function as portable wealth or currency in certain regions. Here, the enduring simplicity of the design and evidence of hand workmanship speak to Ethiopia’s long tradition of personal adornment and metalworking.
